TranSmart/EJM Corporation is currently hiring for a Senior Civil Engineer for our Chicago office.

In addition to having 25 Illinois licensed professional engineers, TranSmart/EJM’s staff is comprised of professionals with licenses and certifications that include structural engineering (SE), traffic operations (PTOE), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), LEED, bridge inspection (program manager), and construction oversight (documentation and materials technician).




JOB TITLE:          Senior Civil Engineer


REPORTS TO:     Chief Civil Engineer


FLSA STATUS:    Exempt


SUMMARY:        Apply professional civil engineering theory and principles to perform complex civil/roadway engineering work and mentor a project team in performing engineering projects.  Lead quality control for project work produced by other teams.



  • Plans, organizes, assigns, implements and manages engineering projects in accordance with budget and schedule requirements

  • Interacts with other departments in response to service requests; researches and gathers all necessary details to determine engineering functional requirements and budget estimates to meet client’s needs

  • Provides roadway engineering design services and design support during construction; provides support for project bid and award phase, construction management, closeout, activation and startup activities as requested by the client

  • Supports development of work plans, safety guidelines, maintenance requirements and operational needs for design projects

  • Assures project compliance with design criteria and standards, safety guidelines, maintenance requirements and operational needs

  • Reviews contract documents for compliance with design codes and standards, design criteria and policies and procedures

  • Reviews designs for quality, constructability and cost effectiveness; recommends design changes

  • Perform internal audits and participate on teams in support of continual improvement initiatives

  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs are followed

  • Proposal preparation

  • Perform other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor's degree - Civil Engineering (from a domestic ABET-EAC university or existing Illinois PE)

  • 5 years of professional engineering experience in civil engineering, including roadway design and MOT

  • Experience in leading or managing engineering projects

  • Knowledge of standards and procedures

  • State of Illinois registration as a Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering, or ability to obtain within 3 months of employment

  • Preference given to candidates with winning proposal writing experience

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office; strong proficiency in Excel required

  • Perform complex civil engineering design work related to roadway facilities, underground utilities, and utility relocations, grading, and drainage for major roadway projects

  • Serve as lead for in-house specialized engineering activities from conception to completion

  • Use computer-aided tools and products such as InRoads, ProjectWise, BlueBeam and MicroStation

  • Understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, contracts and budgets

  • Reading Comprehension - Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.


WORK ENVIRONMENT: Safety related activities are performed primarily in the field for construction projects.  For design and engineering phases of safety work, a standard office environment with extensive public contact and frequent interruptions is to be expected.
