JOB TITLE:          Senior Traffic Engineer

FLSA STATUS:    Exempt


SUMMARY:  The Senior Traffic Engineer will be responsible for performing a variety of project management tasks and traffic engineering assignments including completing traffic analysis and studies, developing traffic signal plans, signal timing plans, maintenance of traffic plans, pavement marking plans, signing plans, and ITS plans.


  • Ability to act as Engineer of Record for complex projects.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in all traffic design concepts, software, manuals and criteria.

  • Commonly serves in role of lead technical professional (LTP).

  • Proficient in technical writing.

  • Able to prepare technical documents for public meetings, presentations, and traffic studies.

  • Capable of leading marketing efforts for complex projects.

  • Capable of presenting to client on projects that TranSmart is pursuing.

  • Establish strong client relationships and contribute to multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Design wheelchair ramps in accordance with the latest ADA Standards.

  • Prepare construction bid documents, including MOT plans, traffic signal plans, curb tie plans, and traffic management.

  • Familiar with IDOT, Illinois Tollway, CDOT, and FHWA design standards, policies, and implementation.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Civil/Transportation Engineering: 6-12 years’ experience.

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in transportation.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in all traffic design concepts, software, manuals, and criteria

  • Synchro experience required; VISSIM experience preferred.

  • Conduct field measurements of intersections and roadways

  • Various levels of project management on transportation projects preferred.

  • Illinois PE certification is required for this position.

  • Responding to queries of public and other departments in a satisfactory manner

  • Performing administrative engineering duties such as issuance of permits and review of applications

  • Perform compilation of data and convert them into information and plans

  • Must have experience in developing PS&E packages, Traffic Studies, Traffic Signal Design, and Traffic Signal Timing and Capacity Analysis.

  • Maintain files and supporting documentation in accordance with company policy and accepted practices

  • Performs other duties as assigned

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Safety related activities are performed primarily in the field for construction projects.  For design and engineering phases of safety work, a standard office environment with extensive public contact and frequent interruptions is to be expected.
