JOB TITLE:     Software Developer (entry level)


REPORTS TO:     Chief Innovation & Technology Engineer


FLSA STATUS:    Exempt


SUMMARY:        The entry level Software Developer will contribute to the enhancement and creation of products and applications for advanced transportation and traveler advisory systems. They will be responsible for ensuring that the quality meets or exceeds the defined requirements.



  • Design, develop, and deliver high quality components and features for designs on component level solutions via design and requirement/specifications

  • Contribute to professional development environment by adhering to development standards in the development of system components

  • Ensure rigorous standards by designing and executing component unit tests and following code quality aspects, including but not limited to SOLID and clean code principles

  • Contribute to the continuous integration and development builds via the configuration environment

  • Communicate with internal and external customers to understand the needs and provide the proper solution

  • 2 years software development and/or deployment experience using Java and J2EE technologies is preferred. C+, XML, and HTML experience is a plus.

  • Must have working knowledge of web services and RESTful interfaces

  • Hands-on development in browser based UI applications, Swing and AWT applications

  • Can work in an open environment and has skills with agile development approaches

  • Collaborates well in teams of at least five people and can work on individual assignments

  • Commitment to working with the software team, as most development ties into integrated systems

  • Hands-on software troubleshooting experience

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to utilize both on-line and team resource to solve problems, maintain schedule, and document lessons learned

  • Permanent US work authorization or legally authorized to work in the US



  • Bachelor or equivalent degree in information technology, computer science/engineering (with programming/application development focus), or related discipline

  • Proficient in developing and troubleshooting server side components of the enterprise applications

  • Development experience with dynamic rich user interfaces using JSP, html, JavaScript, JavaScript libraries including Angular, AJAX is a plus

  • Experience with mobile applications development (Android and iOS)

  • Solid understanding of n-tiered Architecture, SDLC, Web Services Component Architecture, Object Relational Mapping

  • Experience with Remote Method Invocation (RMI), Java Message Service (JMS), or other synchronous/asynchronous message service

  • Strong understanding of Linux/Unix/Microsoft Windows Environments including Bash scripting

  • JAVA development tools including Eclipse, ANT, log4J, etc.

  • Relational database experience (such as Oracle, SQL Server, Postgres etc.)

  • Experience with gathering, documentation, and analysis of business requirements in order to help define scope of software development initiatives and prototyping

  • Understanding and commitment to configuration management strategies and software management processes and tools

  • Ability to learn task goals within the transportation domain

  • Ability to father and interpret data in areas that are more complex and sometimes less clearly defined

  • Utilization of large data sets for collection, processing, archiving, and data analytics

  • Knowledge of digital map and traffic knowledge (such as traffic signal timing)



  • Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment at a client’s facility

  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard

  • Capability to travel to and work on-site at various locations using various modes of private and/or commercial transportation to work on-site in various Northeastern Illinois locations including but not limited - Downtown Chicago, Schaumburg,  and Downers Grove.  Scheduling of which site, days of the week, and times for each location will be subject to specific contract requirements and may change or update periodically.
