JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:          Traffic Engineering Analyst (Traffic Data Scientist)

FLSA STATUS:    Exempt

 

SUMMARY:         The Traffic Engineering Analyst will be based in northeastern Illinois and is expected to include work at the Chicago TranSmart office and client offices within the northeastern Illinois region. The work will include data collection, assessment, analysis, and visualization within multiple transportation modes with clients including municipalities, county and state transportation departments, tollways, transit operators, airports, private sector entities, and national agencies. We are looking for a person within the transportation operations industry that would like to focus on data analysis and simulation to better improve traffic operations for our clients.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support traffic engineering and safety data analysis for both midwestern and national clients.

  • Collect and process large geographic and vehicle-driven data sets.

  • Design programs that aggregate and visualize the data.

  • Be creative in developing visual outputs for the measurements and analysis.

  • Assess data elements as they pertain to measurements and analysis.

  • Consider concepts such as failure management, data normalization, and statistical assessments of data to ensure data will be properly utilized.

  • Analyze large amounts of public traffic data from a variety of traffic and toll data sources.

  • Develop predictive analytics and performance measures to enhance the planning process and to enable data driven decision-making.

  • The Traffic Engineering Analyst will regularly perform Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) procedures on large, diverse datasets to ensure the quality and usefulness of the data (e.g., ingest an online data source, then remove duplicates, errors, outliers, and any data irrelevant to that analysis).

  • Create and design relational database models, by choosing what types of data to collect, tabulate, and link; establishing how data categories are related to each other; and working through how the data is presented to the end user.

  • Interpret data by finding patterns or trends in data that will help answer the question at hand. Experience in Machine Learning is considered a plus.

  • Communicate the results by putting together visualizations like charts and graphs, writing reports, and presenting information to interested parties.

  • Enable new approaches to solve traffic/transportation problems to improve safety and system efficiency.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, computer science, computer engineering, or data science. Master’s degree is preferred.

  • 4 years of transportation operations related experience is required at a minimum.

  • 1-5 years of data analyses experience is required for this position.

  • Excellent communication skills to be able to get your ideas across to other people, including strong written and speaking skills.

  • Knowledge and experience working in the transportation industry.

  • Ability to demonstrate experience with the following tools and programs:

    • SQL queries

    • Languages such as Python, R, and potentially Java

    • Databases such as: PostGres, MS SQL Server, Oracle, and/or MySQL

    • Data analysis tools such as: PowerBI, Tableau, Sisense, Oracle Analytics Cloud

    • Other common Microsoft tools such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint

  • Significant practical knowledge of arterial and limited access roadway concepts such as volume, speed, capacity, congestion, delay, travel times, and other core traffic data concepts such as those found in the Highway Capacity Manual.

  • Experience with airport operations, transit operations, freight operations, and associated data is preferred.

  • Experience with traffic operations signal timing and VISSIM simulation a plus.

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment at the Chicago TranSmart office client offices.
