JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:           Engineer or Technician/Specialist – Innovation and Technology Group

FLSA STATUS:     Exempt

SUMMARY:  The staff member will be responsible for performing various traffic engineering functions ranging to field and office reviews of traffic control devices, traffic data collection and analysis at the direction of an engineer.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Demonstrate proficiency in traffic engineering process, concepts, software, manuals, and criteria

  • Visiting sites to evaluate conditions of traffic control devices based on a variety of visibility and overall physical conditions.

  • Conduct field measurements of intersections and roadways.

  • Prepare elements within Traffic Impact Analyses (including field work/traffic counts, projection of traffic volumes, and traffic incident analysis).

  • Performing administrative engineering duties including development of reports and work orders based on client forms and criteria.

  • Maintain files and supporting documentation in accordance with company and/or client policy and accepted practices.

  • Construction inspection and field reconnaissance.

  • Performs other duties as assigned, commensurate with experience and appropriate training.

  • Adherence to all safety policies and procedures defined by the company and clients.

  • Report to client office and/or field sites up to 5 days per week on a regular basis.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management or certification as an Engineering Technician Certification or experience as contractor or inspector in the construction trades

  • 0-3 years of related experience

  • Knowledge of engineering standards as well as state and local regulations in Illinois a plus

  • Engineering Intern experience is a plus

  • Willingness to work in the field as requested, keeping safety as a priority

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Safety related activities are performed primarily in the field for construction projects of in the office for select information processing.  For design and engineering phases of work, a standard office environment with extensive contact and frequent interruptions can be expected.  Work may be performed from client satellite or field offices that may include garage and workshop space and other equipment necessary to maintain and repair agency assets.  Those field sites and office may include some mild exposure to elements such as dust, insects, and other wildlife.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work may be performed in a standard office environment with extensive contact and frequent interruptions, and in the transportation infrastructure or outside in the field while performing field reconnaissance or construction management duties.

  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office and field setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information

  • Vision – See in the normal visual range with or without correction

  • Hearing – Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction
