Position: Civil Engineer, Roadway Design, TranSmart, LLC, Chicago, IL

 

Duties: The Civil Engineer, Roadway Design is responsible for carrying out a variety of technical tasks related to the planning, design, operations, and maintenance of transportation engineering projects, including: Designing horizontal and vertical alignments of highways; preparation of conceptual plans; Designing of drainage systems; Designing of traffic control plans, signage and striping; Managing utility relocations; Conducting traffic analyses; Preparing operation plans, maintenance plans, and contract plans; Assisting on high value design-build operations; Assisting the design-build team in reviewing submittals, CRFI (construction requests for information), record drawings, and overall coordination; Organizing and delineating information throughout the design-build group with an emphasis on interpreting design drawings and specifications; Reviewing data collected by Total Stations, an electronic/optical surveying instrument, to extract survey data points and perform advanced coordinate-based calculations; Utilizing MicroStation and AutoCAD to prepare plans that describes a specific area from a top-overview; Preparing designs based on precise specifications (e.g., the horizontal curvature and super-elevation of a roadway for a particular speed limit) for different transportation agencies; Preparing estimates based on quantities determined by the specifications and design of a project, which are then included in plan sheets and project deliverables; Providing construction inspection support by reviewing project drawings, engineering plans, and technical standards, and working with transportation engineers in identifying any defects or deficiencies. Travel to worksites throughout the Chicagoland area, as needed.

 

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or equivalent plus 48 months of experience as a civil engineer or related. Prior experience must  include performing roadway geometric analysis, plan and profile drafting, creating specifications, preparing cost estimates, and using MicroStation OpenRoads. Must hold an Illinois driver’s license.
