Jane Byrne Circle Interchange Reconstruction Design, Phase I and II
PROJECT BACKGROUND

As part of the engineering design team, TranSmart performed both Phase I and Phase II evaluation and design services for the reconstruction of the I-90/94, I-55, and I-290 Congress Parkway interchange—one of the most congested and complex in the country.
TranSmart provided traffic engineering services for detour routes needed during the multi-year, multi-stage construction including temporary and permanent traffic signal, roadway lighting, and pavement marking designs for multiple intersections. Multiple detours were required and carefully coordinated to balance constructability and work efficiency against potential inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians. TranSmart performed a detailed traffic analysis for each detour option to assess the potential impacts to traffic congestion and to identify countermeasures. Close coordination with IDOT and interaction with the City of Chicago was required to implement measures that would have the least environmental and operational impact during local street, system ramp, and service ramp closures.
Additionally, TranSmart provided structural engineering services for reviewing deep foundation and earth-retention system submittals.
