As a subconsultant for the Illinois Tollway’s Traffic Engineer team, TranSmart has provided professional services to the Illinois Tollway and the prime firm for over ten years and in several traffic engineering service areas that include ITS, toll technology, traffic operations and design support.

Technology-associated work tasks performed over the course of this multi-year project include:

• Systemwide Construction engineering and inspection services for improvements at approximately 40 existing vehicle-detection sensors along the tollway

• Developed the I-90 Smart Corridor Concept of Operations and Video Simulation for deployment of Active Traffic Management (ATM)

• Facilitated and conducted an evaluation of potential Connected Vehicle (CV) applications for the Illinois Tollway’s I-90 Smart Corridor

• Performed a before-and-after study to assess initial implementation and potential operational benefits of I-90 Smart Corridor ATM deployment

• Conducted an engineering peer review of Illinois Tollway’s I-90 Smart Corridor CV Pilot System architecture and deployment plan documents

• Performed operational bench and field testing of nine roadside units and on-board units on fleet vehicles for I-90 Smart Corridor CV Pilot Program—including equipment testing, data collection, and review of Basic Safety Messages

• Developed a Basic Safety Messages data collector service and built the virtual server specification for Illinois Tollway to gather, store, and manage OBU CV data.
